Leaving the workforce and entering the retirement phase of life is turning out to be a time to set new goals and adapt to a new location, people, and choices.    So far, I've found a much needed challenge for myself and new opportunities through familiar crafts and new arts.    Whether the paintings and items I've made that are pictured here are donated, sold, shown, kept, given as gifts, or thrown out remains to be seen, but for the time being these projects are proving to be enjoyable and sometimes surprising.

September 2016:    The Etsy.com "shop" has proven to be a better way to market my art than showing in the galleries, as I have been doing 2009-2016.   In our summer camping travels, I have noticed, unfortunately, that many galleries have closed over recent years.   It's been about fourteen years now that I have been painting and I enjoy it more each year.  In 2017 and 2020 I taught a beginning watercolor course in our neighborhood which was fun.

As of summer 2020 we have given up camping and will be spending the summer here in Sarasota -- a picturesque and artsy community.

The death strewn along the beach is sad to see and prompted me to write some poetry to express my feelings of the scene.    The painting is named:    Rising Seas - The Lament of the Live Oaks.   (This was written before Tropical Storm Irma hit Hunting Island S.C. last Fall - it's devastated now. )

RISING SEAS - The Lament of the Live Oaks by Ann Carney

Eroded from below, day after day, wave after wave
Our sandy foundation is sloshing around our roots.
Our elegant, massive, jutting and twisting limbs
Now grotesque and pinioned in the sand.
The spiders and insects no longer feed on my parasitic old friends.
All the happy residents of our knotholes,
And clusters of leaves, and wide extending mighty trunks
Have moved on to more upright and secure neighborhoods.

The seas rise and the seas fall but we would prefer to be
Omitted from the harshness of this coastal living.
For one hundred years we have been witness
To the mightiest hurricanes, the fiercest tropical storms,
And the most benign, becalmed moments.
The blue moons and brilliant sunrises passed over us every day.
We were the mighty and will fight to keep ourselves
From sinking into the sea; yet, we all do.
